Mental disorders and illnesses affect your feelings, moods, behavior, and thinking. They can be seasonal and occasional or chronic and long-lasting. When you have a mental illness or condition, your ability to function normally in your day-to-day activities might be affected. There are many mental disorders, and they all fall under different categories. Some common types of conditions include bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders, and eating disorders.

There is no singular cause for mental illnesses or disorders. However, several factors can increase your risk, including genes, family history, life experiences, and traumas. Some are not caused by anything but just manifest in individuals. Different conditions are treated using various therapeutic techniques. For instance, you can treat depression using psychoanalytic techniques such as CBT. On the other hand, TMS therapy will help treat severe depression.

1.Anxiety disorders

If you have a type of anxiety disorder, you will typically respond to particular situations and objects with dread and sometimes fear. Additionally, you are likely to manifest physical signs of panic and anxiety, including sweating and having a rapid head beat. You are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when your response to certain situations is not appropriate, and you cannot control this response. You could also be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder if anxiety significantly interferes with your daily functioning. Anxiety disorders include specific phobias, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

2.Psychotic disorders

Another common type of mental disorder is psychotic disorders. These disorders involve having distorted thinking and awareness. Two significant symptoms of psychotic mental disorders are hallucinations and delusions. Hallucinations refer to experiencing unreal sounds and images. It also includes hearing imaginary voices. On the other hand, delusions refer to false fixed beliefs accepted by the sick individual as accurate even when the contrary is evident. An example is paranoid schizophrenia.

3.Personality disorders

If you have a personality disorder, you will have inflexible and extreme personality traits. These can be distressing and can cause you problems at school, in social settings, and at work. Additionally, the behaviors and thinking patterns of individuals with personality disorders are significantly different from what society expects.

Their cognition is very rigid, that it interferes with their normal functioning. Examples of personality disorders are paranoid personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder.

4.Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that might develop once you experience a terrifying or traumatic event in your life. Examples of these events are physical and sexual assault, childhood trauma, and unexpected losses in life, such as the deaths of loved ones. You can also develop PTSD in the event of natural disasters such as devastating earthquakes. If you have PTSD, you will commonly have frightening and lasting memories and thoughts of traumatic events. Patients with PTSD are usually emotionally numb.

These are four major types of mental disorders. If you are suffering from any of these, you should consult a professional psychiatrist or psychologist. They will support you and help treat or manage your condition.
